Independent review of maternity services at
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust

Amanda Mansfield

I am a Consultant Midwife at the London Ambulance Service where I am the responsible maternity lead for urgent and emergency maternity care. I combine this leadership role with working clinically as a midwife in a local maternity service.

Having trained in 1991, at St Mary’s Hospital in London, I worked across many maternity services providers, building up clinical expertise in supporting women in all settings to provide their care, and in all settings supporting women birth in their homes, in freestanding birth centres and labour wards.  I have undertaken three Consultant Midwife roles across three different maternity services, leading on the development of midwifery-led care, community services involving homebirth and free standing birth centres.

Throughout my midwifery career, my focus has been on safe, kind, and compassionate care.  I have undertaken commissioned maternity reviews of service providers, and reviewed maternity care in regards to safety and learning. I have experience of acting as an expert witness and maintain my clinical practice as a midwife.

I lead on national and international developments on maternity specific telephone triage advice for the urgent and emergency care services such as NHS 111 and 999 to provide correct, safe advice to women and midwives that may require assistance.

Throughout my professional career, I have sought to listen to women’s experiences of care, learn, and use this to inform ongoing development of responsive maternity care.

I am a fellow of the Royal College of Midwives
