Dr Sandra Newbold
I am an experienced obstetrician, having practiced in this specialty for 35 years, 23 of these as a consultant in the NHS. My maternity training was in both the UK and New Zealand, during which I undertook several years of research into the monitoring of babies during labour. As a consultant my focus was on maternity care, both during pregnancy and labour, especially caring for women with complex problems and those who developed problems during labour. I have very recently retired from clinical practice, but I am still involved in maternity care as a specialist advisor for both the CQC and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.
I have considerable experience investigating both complaints and unexpected events, both in my own hospital, and as an external reviewer. Inevitably I have therefore also had experience of feeding back the reports to families after difficult outcomes, I therefore appreciate the importance of explaining things in a way that the families can understand.
