Helen Smith qualified as a midwife in 2002 at East Surrey Hospital, before transferring to Brighton in 2004. Here, she gained in-depth experience spanning all areas of midwifery practice.
She has worked in community as part of a continuity of care service, working in antenatal clinic, providing postnatal care at home and attending both home and hospital births.
Helen has over 12 years of experience as a labour ward coordinator. She is responsible for leading and supporting a multidisciplinary team in a busy unit, ensuring safe care is provided to all women. She has extensive knowledge and skills across the midwifery continuum and is involved in audit, change processes and development. Helen has also been a mentor to student midwives since 2004.
Helen has studied 6 modules at Masters degree level and strives to better inform her clinical practice at every opportunity.
Helen is also a Professional Midwifery advocate (PMA). As a PMA, she supports and guides midwives to support women and their families. She is involved in midwives’ education and development and advocates quality improvement.
