I have been a registered midwife since 1977, I have worked in most clinical areas within various maternity settings since qualifying and at all levels from junior midwife to Director of Midwifery services. I have provided care to many women across the childbearing spectrum: pre-conception, antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal; and in various locations – at home (including homebirth); community health centres; GP practices; in small, large and tertiary maternity units. I keep up to date with clinical training skills. In my most recent role as interim lead midwife for maternity governance I led on serious and adverse incident investigations and reports.
In my role as Director of Midwifery at St George’s, the maternity service overall saw marked improvements in safety, effectiveness and patient experience. As a leader I have promoted best practice in midwifery care by ensuring adequate training programmes, robust governance arrangements and improved staffing levels are in place. I have overseen many service and clinical practice reviews and audits and ensured necessary service and clinical practice changes were implemented safely.
