Dr Charlotte Groves
My middle grade training was in various Level 3 Neonatal Units across London and I have been a Consultant Neonatologist for 15 years. I am experienced and competent in all neonatal procedures and care.
I am currently Clinical Director for Neonatology and have been for 8 years. This has been an interesting and challenging role.
I have managed many risk incidents and I have sat on several serious incident panels and root cause analysis reviews across the Division of Maternal and Child Health. I am involved in teaching using various techniques but prefer the one to one apprenticeship teaching. This form is very apt for neonatal medicine and is aided by the current working pattern of the neonatal consultants.
I am also involved in the in house teaching of junior doctors and regularly teach on ventilation, management of neonatal jaundice, feeding, cranial ultrasounds and total body cooling.
I am an instructor on the Neonatal Life Support course and teach on 2-3 courses a year in my own time. I am the FY2 clinical supervisor for the neonatal unit and supervise at least 6 trainees each year. I am also an educational supervisor to one FY1 trainee per year.
My teaching skills, in handover and on ward rounds, have been formally assessed by an external educationist. The feedback said: ‘there were many examples of excellent teaching …very well embedded and emerging from the clinical work you were engaged in’.
