Dr Heather Brown
I trained in South Africa as an obstetrician gynaecologist and have been working in the UK since 2003. My career has a strong clinical focus combined with research and education and since becoming a consultant in the UK I have moved into clinical leadership and management first as clinical director and then as Obstetric lead, Deputy Chief of Safety, Divisional Chief of Women and Children’s Division. I am currently Deputy Medical Director. I am a Specialist Advisor for the CQC and I am an externally commissioned reviewer of NHS maternity services.
I have a combined clinical leadership and clinical post at present. In my role as Deputy Medical Director my portfolio consists mainly of projects aimed at increasing clinical efficiency and effectiveness across the Trust and supporting the clinical divisions in achieving their performance goals in line with the Trust clinical strategy. There is also a national component in relation to achieving national objectives for 7 Day working.
Clinically I work predominately as an obstetrician. My areas of special interest in obstetrics are evidence based obstetrics and maternal medicine, in particular perinatal mental health and high risk intrapartum care. In terms of my gynaecology practice this is focussed on paediatric and adolescent gynaecology and menopause.
Since 2008 I have been involved in external reviews of maternity services, commissioned by the services themselves and increasingly more often now by external groups.
